The importance of Literacy Day was observed by the students of Chandigarh College of Education on 8th of September,2016 by articulating their thoughts effectively in front of the audience. Ishneet informed that September 8 was proclaimed as International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. In addition to this, Manisha while reciting the poem entitled ‘Dust If You Must’ emphasized on recognizing the values dissemination aspect of the education whereas the real aim of education has just been diminished to making money. Manpreet through her eloquent poem sent across very strong message “The real education not merely about self learning but it in actual terms is about passing on to others , what you have learnt.” Similarly, the other participants also shed light on the different perspectives of Literacy and Education and hence celebrated the day purposefully.
