Chandigarh College of Education celebrated ‘International Mother Language Day

Chandigarh College of Education celebrated ‘International Mother Language Day’ to observe the importance of Punjabi as mother tongue on 19th of February, 2016. The chief guests S. Jasbir Singh Bhullar, retired as army officer, Sahitya Award Winner and also a prolific writer of Punjabi novels and stories accompanied by Mr. Vijay Vivek who is a renowned poet graced the occasion. The B.Ed students Charanpreet Kaur and Navpreet Singh anchored the event eulogizing Punjabi as our mother tongue. Dr. Vikas Singh , Dir., CGC was escorted by Dr. Neena Sawhney , Principal CCE at the event. Dr. Vikas in his welcome address said “Students now-a-days are seen enrolling themselves more under technical courses than in literature and languages.” Dr. Vikas added further that the Government Yojnas are also promoting digital and technical education. He also emphasized on the major role of English communication; where there is an equal need to maintain balance between one’s mother tongue as one’s pride and English as foreign language. S. Jasbir Singh introducing himself as a passionate Punjabi novels and stories writer shared many unknown facts about Punjabi language He expressed concern over UNESCO’s latest report “ Punjabi language will go extinct in 21st century.” Mr. Bhullar said that it is painful to see some evil powers work against the language in which your mother has sung lullabies to you and the language in which holy ‘GURU GRANTH SAHIB ‘ ji has been penned down. Mr. Bhullar also apprised of the students of the historical status of Punjabi and its rich vocabulary from the ancient period to British period through his veracious examples and citations. He also shed some light on how some languages are dynamic and the others like Sanskrit are till date rigid and therefore heading towards its extinction. He urged that if we did not preserve our mother languge Punjabi then soon we would estrange ourselves of ‘Waris Shah’s Heer’ and ‘Peelu’s Mirza’. In the end, Mr. Vijay Vikas concluded the session highlighting the linguistic aspects of Punjabi with his beautiful versification. Subsequently, Dr. Neena Sawhney presented both the guests with a memento and expressed her gratitude .
